The central idea of this topic revolves around the occurrence of a politically orchestrated environmental phenomenon, namely the reciprocal launching of waste balloons between North Korea and South Korea, serving as a contemporary model of environmental warfare on the Korean Peninsula. Pyongyang employs these balloons, which carry various types of waste, as a tool for psychological and environmental pressure against Seoul. These operations are conducted in response to anti-North Korean regime propaganda campaigns initiated by activists from the South across the border. The primary aim is to impose environmental and health burdens on both the population and authorities in South Korea. The waste dispatched via these balloons includes plastics, cigarette butts, organic refuse, and potentially contaminated materials, thereby posing an environmental and public health threat that necessitates meticulous intervention by relevant authorities. Furthermore, such actions constitute a form of psychological and environmental warfare that exacerbates tensions between the two Koreas and reflects the complexities of their ongoing political and military conflict. South Korea, in particular, faces significant challenges in managing this waste and addressing its repercussions, a task that requires coordination between security and environmental agencies, as well as public awareness regarding the dangers of such waste and the importance of avoiding direct contact with it. Overall, this phenomenon illustrates a shift from traditional warfare to indirect environmental conflicts, wherein the environment itself becomes a battleground for political struggle, with environmental, political, and security dimensions intricately intertwined.
