This study approaches hybridity as an interpretive lens for understanding the formation of certain contemporary democratic political systems, not as an incomplete transitional stage between democracy and authoritarianism, but as a complex configuration with distinct mechanisms of production and operation. It examines its conceptual and theoretical foundations, analyzes the role of political elites in shaping it through the adaptation and redeployment of democratic institutions, and explores the interaction between imported institutional models and local contexts. It also addresses hybridity in relation to legitimacy, system sustainability, and the reproduction of power, while highlighting the limits of normative democratic judgment when institutions are embedded in political structures that redefine their functions and effects. The study concludes that hybridity offers an analytical framework for understanding systems that preserve democratic forms while constraining their transformative potential.
