جاء القرن الحادي والعشرون بتحولات كبيرة في توجهات الإستراتيجية الأمريكية، إذ شكّلت آسيا، وشرقها تحديداً، التوجه الجديد للجيواستراتيجية الأمريكية بعد أن كانت أوروبا، في أعقاب الحرب العالمية الثانية، هي نقطة الاهتمام الأبرز، ثم تصدّر الشرق الأوسط، بتشعباته وتفاعلاته الكبرى، الاهتمام الإستراتيجي الأمريكي. وكان السبب الأبرز في ذلك يعود إلى ظهور منافس جديد يسعى للتوسع إقليمياً، وهو الصين.
