يتعدد مفهوم القوة تبعًا لاختلاف الآراء والتعريفات بين المفكرين والباحثين، فضلًا عن اختلاف النظريات التي فسرته. لذا، يُعد البحث في موضوع القوة الذكية وتطبيقاتها بالغ الأهمية. وتُعتبر استراتيجية القوة الذكية التي تبنتها الولايات المتحدة في سياستها الخارجية بعد تولي الرئيس باراك أوباما منصبه عام ٢٠٠٩ مزيجًا من القوة الناعمة والقوة الصلبة. ويعكس هذا النهج صعوبة تحقيق النتائج المرجوة باستخدام القوة الناعمة أو الصلبة منفردة.
